Like rasps to a farrier, CV’s to a job seeker is an essential took when it comes to looking for a new role. Not only does it give your prospective employer a good insight into your previous work experience, but also a chance to sell your other skills into a business.
With the average employer/recruiter taking 8 seconds to skim read a CV, how do we keep our CV looking show ready?
Below are some of our top tips to help your CV stand out from the crowd.
Factual
We have all witnessed riders that have potentially exaggerated their abilities, being matched with a horse who very quickly determines the original brief wasn’t quite right.
Keep your CV factual so when applying for roles, you are matched perfectly in accordance to your knowledge and skillset.
Tidy
As equestrians, we love our matchy matchy sets, whether that be matching numnah to leg wraps or bridle to saddle colour. We take pride in a clean and tidy appearance when it comes to our horses.
Take pride in your CV in the same way. Keep the same format throughout, stick to one font and ensure it looks consistent and tidy.
Direct
Humans tend to waffle on when we are unsure what to write or speak about, especially when it comes to securing that dream role.
Keeping your CV direct ensures you get the most relevant information out there in an easy to read format that can be accessed by the eye quickly.
Bullet points are a great way of keeping your CV short and sweet but allowing you to show off your achievements, offer an easy-to-read run down of responsibilities you had and any particular products or software you have used.
Show Off
Equestrians are renowned for showing off frillies from successful competitions, whether that be putting them on display (if you are anything like me, that means sat in the window of the lorry!) or uploading those bridle shots to social media.
Do not be afraid to show off your achievements! These could be overachieving on sales targets, running a social media marketing campaign that increased page likes or implementing a new system. List these in your first bullet point under each work experience section it applies to ensure they are seen!
Check, check and check again
How many times do you check your girth before heading off for your ride or out jumping?
Apply this to your CV. Ensure your information is up to date (this could be contact information or dates of employment) through to grammar and punctuation.
First impressions are everything when it comes to securing a new role.
